Waterkant, Amsterdam

Waterkant, a bar named after Paramaribo's oldest boulevard, and that turned this brutalist parking garage at the edge of the Golden Age grachtengordel into an architectonic hotspot.

Architect: Piet Zanstra. Building nickname: Zanstra's Buttocks.

Ink on paper, 35x45cm, € 600,- (excl. VAT 9%)

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Below the Rijksmuseum is a bike tunnel, connecting the Museumplein with the canal ring. For over 10 years I cycled through that tunnel twice a day, going to work. When you exit the tunnel on the other side, Rembrandt's Nightwatch is right above you.

Ink on paper, A3, € 500,- (excl. VAT 9%)

Far end of the Bosbaan, Amsterdam

The 'Bosbaan' is the 1928 Olympic rowing lake in Amsterdam. We were cycling to the pancake restaurant behind these trees. The contrast between the 'light' buildings and the darkness of the forest reflected in the water caught my eye.

Ink on paper, 28x20 cm, € 500,- (excl. VAT 9%)

Stadsschouwburg, Amsterdam

The Stadsschouwburg, aka International Theatre Amsterdam. Back in the day when I was a playwriting student, this was my temple. I spent all my money in the Theatre Bookshop in the right corner.

View on Santiago de Compostela

While waiting for better weather in the city I decided to climb the Monte Pedroso to the northwest. Halfway - close to the residency of the Galician president - I got this view.

Ink on paper, 25x50 cm, € 750,- (excl. VAT 9%)

Santiago de Compostela Cathedral

The first time I saw the cathedral it was night. The second time the light was coming from the back. So I first climbed the mountain opposite the cathedral to get a wide view - and when I came back the sun was shining from the perfect angle.

Lighthouse Fisterre, Galicia

The first day I walked from the town up to the lighthouse in a drizzle. The lighthouse was covered in fog and I couldn't figure out where the actual horizon was.

So when the sun came out the next day, I immediately went back (by car this time) to get a clear shot.

Hotel L'Europe, Amsterdam

This hotel is owned by Heineken. Freddy Heineken used the bar as his office and then decided to buy it, so he could put his name on the roof. The bar is now named Freddy's in his honour. We once rented it to give a presentation to Heineken people.

Victoria Hotel, Amsterdam

When I was 14 and traveled to Amsterdam alone for the first time, this was the first building I saw as I exited the train station - for me it resembles the big city. Of course there's a famous story about the two small houses in front - the owners asked too much, so they simply built the hotel around them. Thomas Rosenboom wrote a famous novel about it, Publieke Werken.

Staalmeestersbrug, Amsterdam

For some reason this wooden draw-bridge turned into Amsterdam's love-lock-bridge. They remove the locks every other day, because the bridge just can't handle all that weight.

Café De Jaren, Amsterdam

This terrace, on the border of the Amstel river and the Kloveniersburgwal, is the best in town. In the days of my advertising career I first went here to read the newspaper or make a small drawing before I went to work.
